How to Prepare for Your First Spa Visit

Sep 28, 2024 5 min read Miyapur Wellness Spa Team

Nearly everyone is a little unsure before a first massage. What do I wear? How much do I say? Is it rude to fall asleep? None of it is complicated once you know how a session actually runs, so here is the whole thing from arrival to the walk home.

Before you arrive

Eat something light an hour or two beforehand — a full stomach makes lying face down uncomfortable, and an empty one can leave you lightheaded. Drink water through the day. Skip alcohol before your appointment.

Arrive about ten minutes early. That buffer means you are not starting your treatment with your pulse still racing from the traffic on Miyapur Main Road.

What to wear

Wear whatever is comfortable to travel in. You will change at the spa, and we provide fresh linens and disposables for every guest. You undress only to the level you are comfortable with, and you are draped with a towel or sheet throughout the session — only the area being worked on is uncovered at any time.

The consultation

Your therapist will ask a few short questions before starting: any injuries, recent surgery, pregnancy, skin conditions, allergies to oils or creams, and what you want out of the session. Be direct here. "My right shoulder has been bad for a month and I sit at a laptop all day" gives your therapist far more to work with than "just a general massage, please".

This is also when you choose a treatment if you have not already. Not sure? A cream or dry massage is the gentlest introduction. Deep tissue is better if you have a specific problem area.

During the session

A few practical things nobody tells first-timers:

  • Breathe normally. Holding your breath tenses the muscle being worked on.
  • Speak up about pressure at any time — too light is as unhelpful as too firm.
  • Talking is optional. Most people go quiet after a few minutes, and that is normal.
  • Falling asleep is a compliment, not an embarrassment. It happens constantly.
  • Tell your therapist if you are too warm, too cold, or uncomfortable in a position.

Afterwards

Get up slowly, drink water, and avoid a heavy gym session for the rest of the day. Mild tenderness the next day is normal after deeper work, similar to the feeling after exercise, and it settles within a day or two.

A warm shower that evening helps. So does an early night — your body does its repair work while you sleep.

A few things worth knowing

Sessions run 45 or 60 minutes, and the clock starts at the treatment, not at check-in. Our therapists are trained and our rooms are private and sanitised between every guest. If anything at all feels off during your visit, say so — a good spa would far rather adjust than have you endure it politely.

Key Takeaways

  • Eat light, hydrate, and arrive ten minutes early
  • You are draped throughout; undress only to your comfort level
  • Describe your problem areas specifically during the consultation
